Systematic Performance Evaluation of Shield TBM Cutters for Excavating Multiple Soft Rock

Cutter performance evaluation is important for shield TBM during the design and refurbishment stage. To face challenges of choosing proper cutters tunneling in complex condition, according to concept parameter profile analysis, a systematic method was proposed. In this novel method, by comparing with their expected best value corresponding unacceptable limit, all selected parameters can be synthesized assess proximity overall merit each cutter respect performances considered under possible geological conditions. Performance indexes including cutting efficiency, structural strength, wear life, dynamic response were individually analyzed based on linear tests, finite element analyses, theoretical calculations. Finally, case study carried out demonstrate how applied find optimal among small-scale disc two scrapers used multiple soft rock. case, three types concrete specimens distinct mechanical properties carefully prepared substitute The results show that has an intrinsic applicability helping make reasonable trade-off between cost selection process.
